I still remember my first Maipole festival in Germany many years ago. It was the start of spring, and the whole village turned out for it. Everyone was dressed up and the Maipole in the center was wrapped with bright ribbons. There was a lot of laughter and dancing, and you could hear music everywhere. People of all ages were catching up, sharing big plates of food and drinking beer right from the tap. It felt like everyone was part of one big family celebrating together. Now, all these years later, I get to relive that joyful tradition right here in my backyard at the Amana Colonies Maifest.

Our hike from Monterosso to Vernazza promised an adventure, yet it was tougher than any of us anticipated. A pinch of research would have clued us in, but we skipped that step. This oversight set the stage for an unforgettable experience. The Cinque Terre, with its rugged beauty along Italy’s Riviera, etched a lasting memory in our hearts, filled with lessons, laughter, and the sheer unpredictability of travel.

Chiang Mai is essentially Thailand’s second city – the smaller, more relaxed answer to the madness of Bangkok and the chill space sans the Phuket beaches. It was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, but now is a major draw for backpackers and travelers of all kinds, not to mention older ex-pats, humanitarians and digital warriors.

Today is my birthday and I am spending ot and the month of March in Italy. Spring in Italy has been full of surprises. Despite my initial concerns about the cold potentially spoiling the enjoyment of Italy’s famous natural beauty, my worries were unfounded. The weather is unexpectedly warm, a pleasant surprise that probably points to global warming. The heavy coat I brought, expecting to shield against the chill, has become my personal sauna.
I am hanging out in Italy for a month. Unfortunately, I didn’t get my international driver’s license before going to Italy, so now I can’t drive here. This will require me to use buses, trains, and other public transport to get around. I’m not hating it, it’s been awhile since I’ve driven in Europe. While it’s a handy way to travel, there are a few things I’ve had to figure out to make it easier and cheaper a bit of know-how. Here’s a concise guide to making the most of your public transportation experience in Rome, Florence, Formia, and Naples Italy.
