New Sanno Hotel and Resort

Affordable Luxury: Unbeatable Value for Military Travelers

We stayed at the New Sanno Hotel & Resort on our recent trip to Tokyo. We stayed there to save money. Tokyo is a costly city. The hotel delivers tremendous value for military and DOD travelers, especially compared to comparable hotels in the Tokyo area. And everyone knows it. So you need to book well in advance by going to the New Sanno website for their reservation policy and online booking. We paid $64 per night and feel like we stole something.

New Sanno Hotel and Resort

Armed Forces Resorts & DOD Employees

The New Sanno Hotel is one of the hotels in the Armed Forces chain of resorts. Unlike the other MWR resorts in Honolulu, Seoul, Orlando, or Edelweiss– it is privately managed. Access to the hotel is limited to military ID holders (and their guests) and certain DOD employees and is strictly enforced at the manned entrance, so be prepared to show your ID every time you return. There is a Navy Exchange as well as other services designed specifically for military travelers.

Azabu Neighborhood

The Hiro-o Station

The New Sanno is very convenient to explore the city. Located in the residential neighborhood of Azabu, you can actually walk from the hotel to the Shibuya area or the Tokyo Tower in 30 minutes. But if you don’t want to walk, the Hiro-o subway station (Hibaya Line) is only 3-4 blocks from. The subway is pretty easy to understand, it took us less than 15 minutes to figure out. You just have to remember there are two companies operating two separate lines (subway and Toei) that intersect but maintain their independence in ticketing. The Hiro-o station is on the Hibaya line of the Tokyo subway. The popular Roppongi Hills area is just one stop down the line.

Facilities

The hotel is decorated in timeless elegance. Dark woods, massive stone columns, intricate ceiling details, and lighting. Pretty area rugs and inlaid marble slab floors define the spaces. The large library chairs are deep and inviting.

The New Sanno Hotel, situated in the heart of the exciting Tokyo, offers 149 luxurious rooms. It has a variety of accommodations and restaurants in an English-speaking environment. It offers a swimming pool, recreational facilities, beauty salon, Navy Exchange, and other services designed specifically for military travelers including concierge service, a gift shop, general store. The gift shop has a number of beautiful souvenirs to include kimonos, artwork, and magnets of course.

Room Service and Restaurants

There are several restaurants located in the hotel and a top-notch buffet on Sunday. And you can also order room service from an extensive menu if you’d prefer to sleep in and catch up on your favorite shows on AFN.

Sunrise Cafe

We ate in the Sunrise Cafe and the Fair Winds a few times and each meal was delicious. I especially like the tuna sashimi and Miso Salmon in the Cafe and the fish tacos and buffalo chicken dip in the lounge. You can also purchase food and drinks to enjoy in the comfort of your room… which we took advantage of a few times after a day of sight-seeing.

Empire Room Sunday Brunch

The Sunday Brunch in the Empire Room on the 1st floor is very popular from 10-2, Adults: $25.95/ Children (4-12): $12.95, but we decided to order room service instead.

New Sanno Hotel Amenities

The Rooms and Service

The rooms are large and spacious. I bagging my foot up against the wall because it was too close to the wall. Which also made it hard to get out of the bed. Each room comes with a DVD player and DVDs are available to “rent” free of charge at reception. The rooms have the obligatory mini-fridge, blow dryer, table for two, and pullout sofa. However no microwave. There are a ton of free toiletries and a black washcloth to remove makeup.

Everybody was nice and welcoming. Thanks to the maid who cleaned our room and told us what NOT to miss on our upcoming overnight to Kyoto. I appreciate the bellman who helped me search for a sweater when we dropped off our bags before the 3 pm check-in. And the waiter who moved us to a warmer area of the cafe when he saw me shivering. This is one time when the hype is well-deserved. I highly recommend the New Sanno Hotel & Resort.
